TRAVEL GUIDES
Do I Need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to Rent a Car in Malaysia?

Planning to drive in Malaysia? One of the most common questions we get at our KLIA counters is whether you need an International Driving Permit (IDP). The answer depends on the country that issued your driving licence, not your passport. Here’s a simple guide so you arrive with the right documents.
The Rule Depends on Your Licence Country
Your licence-issuing country decides what you need. A Malaysian passport holder with a UK licence follows the UK rule, and a UK passport holder with an Australian licence follows the Australian rule.
ASEAN Licences: No IDP Needed
If your licence was issued in an ASEAN country (Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar), you do not need an IDP.
- Bring your valid driving licence
- If your licence is not in English, bring an English translation
Other Countries: Licence + IDP
For most other countries, bring your original driving licence together with a valid IDP issued in the same country as your licence.
- The IDP must be valid and match your licence
- An IDP on its own is not a licence. Always bring both.
- If you don’t have an IDP, talk to our counter staff. In some cases you may still rent after signing an IDP declaration form, but having an IDP is the safest option if you are stopped by the police.
- This includes licences from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Pakistan.
China Licences
Chinese driving licences are accepted with an official English translation, plus signing our IDP declaration form at the counter.
Licences from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Pakistan
Licences issued in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Pakistan are accepted with a valid International Driving Permit (IDP). Without an IDP, they are accepted only after signing the SEIYON IDP Declaration and Indemnity Form at the counter.
Other Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of driving experience from the licence issue date
- Driver age 23 to 65 (surcharges apply outside this range at the counter)
- Passport
- Credit card in the lead driver’s name for the deposit
Why It Matters
Driving without the right documents can lead to police fines and may affect your insurance cover if there is an accident. Bringing the right documents means a faster pickup and peace of mind on the road.
